At least five workers have suffered injuries after an explosion occurred at a container terminal at Galveston Port, according to city officials. At approximately 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, the Galveston Fire Department was dispatched to a call involving a small fire and explosion at the Texas International Terminals property. Galveston police spokesperson Kurt Koopman stated that five workers were injured in the incident. A City of Galveston Office of Emergency Management spokesperson states that the workers were welding a pipe connected to a flare at the Texas International Terminals when a flash fire sparked.
Upon arriving at the scene, Galveston firefighters did not locate any leaks or an active fire. Three of the injured workers suffered burns, while two other victims suffered other injuries. The injured workers have been transported to the hospital to receive medical assistance. A spokesperson with the Galveston Fire Department confirmed that there is no current danger to the public as a result of the incident.
