Attorneys Representing Injury Victims of Chemical Release Pemex Plant in Deer Park

On October 10, 2024, a deadly release of hydrogen sulfide gas at the Pemex industrial plant in Deer Park, Texas resulted in two people losing their lives. Additionally, as of Thursday evening, at least 35 people had been injured.  This incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols in industrial facilities and the rights of those affected. Pemex has the responsibility to protect anybody who works at the plant. Clearly, they failed here. They must be held accountable for the harm they have caused.

What Happened?

The incident occurred at around 4:20 p.m. during routine operations, when hydrogen sulfide – a colorless and potentially toxic gas – seeped into the air at the plant. The company responsible, Mexico-based PEMEX, said in a statement that plant operations were halted once the chemical leak was detected and local authorities were notified. While investigations are still underway, people have lost their lives and others have been seriously harmed.  If you hire our office to handle your case, we will fight hard to make sure PEMEX pays for the damage they have caused. According to officials, a temporary shelter-in-place order was put into effect for residents of Deer Park and certain areas of Pasadena.

If you or a loved one has been injured in the Pemex chemical release, it’s important to understand your rights. As a Pemex injury law firm, we are dedicated to helping victims seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

What is hydrogen sulfide?

Hydrogen sulfide is an extremely rapidly acting, highly toxic, colorless gas with a distinct rotten-egg odor.  It is used in many industries and is a by-product of oil refining, mining, and rayon manufacturing, among other industrial processes.

Health Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide Exposure

At low levels, hydrogen sulfide exposure can cause serious irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Moderate levels can cause headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, coughing spells, and make breathing difficult. Higher levels can cause convulsions, shock, convulsions, coma, and even death.

After a serious exposure to hydrogen sulfide, symptoms usually begin immediately and the more serious the exposure, the more severe the symptoms.

As previously mentioned, even in small amounts, hydrogen sulfide has a strong rotten-egg odor. However, with continued high levels of exposure, the poison may deaden a person’s sense of smell and they may no longer be able to smell it. If the rotten egg odor is no longer noticeable, it may not necessarily mean that exposure has stopped.

A single small exposure from which a person recovers quickly is not likely to cause delayed or long-term effects. However, even moderate exposure can cause residual damage and a serious exposure that causes coma or convulsions may damage the brain and heart.

Currently, there is no proven antidote for hydrogen sulfide poisoning, but the effects of hydrogen sulfide can be treated and some exposed persons get well. However, those who have had serious or prolonged exposures may need to be hospitalized immediately.
